The Interior Ministry has declared Friday, July 4, 2025, a public holiday in commemoration of Republic Day, which falls on Tuesday, July 1.
In a statement dated Thursday, June 26, the Ministry explained that the holiday shift follows the passage of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which introduces significant changes to Ghana’s holiday calendar.
“The general public is hereby informed that Tuesday, 1st July 2025, is Republic Day. However, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, by Executive Instrument (E.I), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2021 (Act 601) has declared Friday, 4th July, 2025 as a Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement read.
The newly passed legislation, presented to Parliament by Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, allows for public holidays that fall on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays to be moved to either the preceding Friday or the following Monday.
Government officials say the change is intended to promote longer weekends, boost productivity, and help businesses and public institutions plan their operations more effectively.
The bill, which was passed on Wednesday, June 25, also restores July 1 as Republic Day, marking Ghana’s transition to a republic in 1960. The day, which was previously removed from the statutory holiday list, has now been reinstated to recognise its historical significance.
Despite opposition from Minority MPs, who criticised the swift passage of the bill under a certificate of urgency, government insists the new holiday arrangement will benefit workers, businesses, and the economy as a whole.
