It is obvious that the human heart is an important part of the body. Without it, life is practically impossible. Regardless of this knowledge, many people are prone to heart conditions due to certain lifestyles which increase cardiovascular risk factors.
Risk factors like smoking, overweight, high blood pressure and diabetes have been known to be leading causes of heart related deaths. So as part of Starr FM’s month-long heartbeat project, we ask how people can keep their hearts healthy.
Dr. Adele Hormeku, who is a medical officer with the National Cardiothoracic Unit, has advised Ghanaians to live a healthy lifestyle to protect their hearts. He said people must exercise more and eat healthy food.
“It is said that the regular average adult takes at least 16,000 steps if there is something to put across with physical activities adding up to the other modifiable risk factors – diet, smoking, obesity, diabetes, cholesterol among others. A lot of people have been diagnosed as hypertensive or diabetic and they expose and allow themselves to these and down the line suffer the complication. They should stay consistent and it’s not just about how you feel,” Dr. Hormeku noted.
The Heartbeat Project is an initiative of Starr 103.5 FM with support from Live 91.9FM and GhOne TV.
