Ghana’s 68th Independence Anniversary which was planned to be a scaled-down version of the usual occasion, is underway at the Jubilee House in Accra.
The event, on the theme, “Reflect, Review and Reset” is in contrast with the usual 6th March celebrations where security agencies and selected schools stage parades before dignitaries and guests.
The government has also canceled the independence celebration tour by the previous administration where the ceremony was moved to a different region annually.
This time, the Mahama government decided to return the national celebrations to the capital citing costs involved.
In a briefing yesterday, the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu disclosed that the planners had succeeded in cutting 90% of the 2024 budget for the independence celebration.
Meanwhile, the 68th Independence Anniversary is being attended by President John Mahama, Vice-President Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman and ministers of state. Also in attendance are the two living former presidents, John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo.
The event is expected to be climaxed with a speech by President Mahama.
