The Vice President of Ghana, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium that claimed the lives of six young Ghanaians during the ongoing Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
In a statement dated Wednesday, November 12 noted, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang described the incident as a heartbreaking loss, noting that all the victims were aspiring recruits who had gone to the exercise with hopes of serving their country.
The Vice President extended heartfelt condolences to the families of those who died and wished a full and speedy recovery to those injured.
She also called on Ghanaians to remain calm while authorities conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and implement measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The stampede occurred around 6:20 a.m. when a surge of applicants breached security protocols and rushed the gates ahead of the scheduled screening. Medical teams transported the injured to the 37 Military Hospital, where 12 are reported in critical condition and five are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
In response to the tragedy, the Ghana Armed Forces suspended the recruitment exercise to review safety protocols.
President John Dramani Mahama confirmed that all six victims were young women, describing the incident as one of the most painful moments in recent memory, and ordered a full independent investigation to identify the cause and recommend measures to prevent future incidents.
Authorities continue to manage the situation, providing medical care to the injured and coordinating support for the bereaved families.
