The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has initiated an investigation into reports that some shipping lines are imposing an emergency conflict surcharge on cargo.
Responding to concerns circulating on social media, Prof. Gyampo clarified that the Ghana Shippers Authority does not impose such charges and has not officially been notified of any emergency surcharge by shipping companies.
According to him, shipping lines are private operators that own vessels and determine their own charges, while the Authority’s regulatory mandate focuses on monitoring and regulating the local charges imposed by these shipping companies.
Prof. Gyampo said the Authority only became aware of the alleged surcharge through a complaint shared on social media and has since taken steps to verify the claims.
He revealed that he had contacted the complainant directly to request documentary evidence to support the allegation and has commenced an investigation into the matter.
The CEO emphasized that the Ghana Shippers Authority is not responsible for imposing or collecting the alleged surcharge, adding that the Authority remains committed to protecting the interests of shippers and ensuring fairness within the shipping and logistics sector.
The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine whether any shipping lines operating in Ghana have introduced such charges without proper notification or justification.
