TRAFFITECH-GH: Drivers face fines of up to GH¢2,400 as enforcement begins Oct. 1

Motorists could face fines of up to GH¢2,400 when the TRAFFITECH-GH automated traffic enforcement system becomes fully operational on October 1, 2026.

The Ghana Police Service says the penalties are based on a penalty unit of GH¢12, with the amount depending on the nature of the offence.

Under the enforcement regime, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs could attract a fine between GH¢600 and GH¢2,400, while using a phone while driving could cost up to GH¢600.

Jumping a red light, failing to stop or yield, speeding and street or drag racing could attract fines ranging from GH¢120 to GH¢360.

The Police says pedestrians could also be penalised, with jaywalking or refusing to use a footbridge attracting a fine of up to GH¢60.

For offences detected by the cameras, the penalty will increase with repeated violations. The Police states: “1st offence — GH¢120; 2nd offence — GH¢120; 3rd offence — GH¢120; 4th offence — GH¢180; 5th offence — GH¢240.”

A sixth offence committed within 24 months could lead to court proceedings and the suspension or revocation of a driver’s licence for at least 12 months. The offender could also be required to undergo retraining and retesting.

The Police has also warned vehicle owners to be mindful of who uses their vehicles because camera-detected offences are tied to the registered owner.

“For camera-detected offences, the notice goes to the REGISTERED OWNER of the vehicle,” the Police said.

TRAFFITECH-GH is being introduced as part of efforts to strengthen road traffic enforcement through technology and reduce violations on Ghana’s roads.

The automated system will use cameras to identify certain traffic offences and support enforcement without relying solely on physical intervention by traffic officers.

The full enforcement of the system from October 1 is therefore expected to make motorists more accountable for their conduct on the road.
