Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has condemned the actions of some security personnel during the special voting on Monday, December 2, 2024.
Dr. Asah-Asante’s remarks followed incidents involving a security officer who was caught capturing his vote and an immigration officer who, upon attempting to cast his ballot at Ablekuma Central, was informed that his identity had been mistakenly used to vote.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Dr. Asah Asante categorically stated that vote capturing is illegal, as Ghana’s election laws do not permit such actions.
He described the incidents as unfortunate and expressed disappointment in the conduct of the personnel involved. However, he commended the authorities for swiftly identifying the perpetrators, asserting that this action will serve as a deterrent to future violations.
Dr. Asah-Asante said, “It was very wrong, the law regulating the conduct of everybody, relating to the election does not allow that so that’s totally wrong. I’m happy that yesterday they took judicial notice of that and they are in the appropriate forum, answering questions for their actions. That’s how it should go, democracy is anchored on the rule of law so anybody who wants to go beyond the law, I’m afraid, we’ll bring you to book. I’m disappointed that these are not ordinary people, but offices of the law, it was unfortunate.”
