Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has assured the public that the ongoing runway extension project at the Kumasi Airport will be completed and fully operational by the end of 2025.
Addressing journalists at a stakeholders’ breakfast meeting organised by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in Accra, Mr Nikpe reiterated government’s commitment to upgrading aviation infrastructure to promote economic development and regional integration.
“The runway at Kumasi Airport is currently 1,881 metres long, which is slightly short for some medium-body aircraft. We are planning to extend it to 2,320 metres. This upgrade will allow medium-body aircraft and long-distance flights to operate more efficiently at the facility,” the Minister explained.
He added, “We are very hopeful that the runway extension will be completed and operational by the end of this year.”
Meanwhile, the Acting Director-General of the GCAA, Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur, called on stakeholders to continue supporting the Authority in delivering on its core mandate of ensuring safety, security, and operational excellence across Ghana’s aviation sector.
