The government has reaffirmed its commitment to paying the outstanding 2025/2026 Book and Research Allowance owed to lecturers of Ghana’s technical universities.
The assurance follows a warning from the Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) that continued delays in the payment of the allowance could trigger industrial action.
The allowance is intended to support lecturers with expenses related to academic research, books and other scholarly materials.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, September 16, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu said the payment process had advanced sufficiently for some eligible beneficiaries to receive the allowance with their September salaries.
He explained that the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) had been directed to submit the relevant beneficiary data to the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department for processing.
Mr. Iddrisu said information covering about 8,000 TUTAG members had already been entered into the payment system.
“We directed GTEC to provide data to the Controller and Accountant-General and I am happy to note that some of you will receive your Book and Research Allowance in your September salary. Those of you who have had your data captured will receive it.”
The Minister said government was committed to settling the allowance for all eligible beneficiaries and was engaging the Controller and Accountant-General to facilitate the process.
“We are committed to honouring all and as of the close of work yesterday [Tuesday, September 15], I spoke to the Controller and Accountant-General and he said he has entered data for up to 8,000 persons.”
The latest assurance comes amid mounting concerns among technical university lecturers over the delayed payment of the 2025/2026 allowance.
TUTAG had threatened industrial action over the issue, putting pressure on government to resolve the payment delays.
