The Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has commended the U.S. government for its support to Ghana’s security sector through the donation of 14 armored personnel carriers to the Ghana Armed Forces.
Speaking at the official handing over ceremony, Dr. Omane Boamah emphasized that the equipment will significantly enhance the military’s operational capacity, particularly in counter-terrorism efforts and the ongoing fight against illegal mining.
The donation forms part of broader defence cooperation between Ghana and the United states of America, with much focus on training and capacity building.
At the official handing over ceremony at the 153 Armoured Regiment at Burma Camp in Accra, U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Virginia Palmer, described the Armoured Personnel Carriers as a vital reinforcement for Ghana’s northern border security and ongoing efforts to combat regional instability.
“The United States values its close relationship with Ghana and will continue to support its efforts to enhance national and regional security.”
Receiving the vehicles, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah expressed appreciation to the U.S. government and assured the effective use and proper maintenance of the Armoured Personnel Carriers.
“These vehicles will go a long way to enhance our operational readiness, especially in counter-terrorism and the fight against illegal mining.”
Selected military personnel, including two females were given a four-week training prior to ensure the proper operation of the vehicles which require specialised handling.
The Armoured Personnel Carriers are expected to significantly boost the Ghana Armed Forces’ ability to respond to emerging security threats at home and across the region.
