Aggrieved students of the University of Ghana (UG) – Legon have demonstrated against the new accommodation policy and increase in fees.
They are demanding immediate reversal of the new accommodation policy which prevents continuing students from residing in both the Mensah Sarbah and Commonwealth Halls.
The students also want government to direct the university to rescind its decision to increase fees more than the 15 percent directed by Parliament.
“The whole demonstration is just about students getting back their freedom on the things that are happening on campus. First of all the increment of school fees and second the accommodation challenges that University of Ghana has been facing for so long.
“They are imposing things on students just like the in and out, out policy which is not something that will help. The whole thing is they are trying to fight the accommodation issues with this policy. They should re-estate students of Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah Hall back,” a student told Starr News.
The students also requested the intervention of the government to solve the challenges in order not to make education a privilege for a few wealthy persons.
“Because I have lost my mum and this semester I have to pay the fees myself. So if I’m paying my fees and you’ve increased it by 40 percent how do you want me to continue?
“We have students coming all the way from Kasoa, Tema so if you are taking public transport by the time you get to the school you will have missed lectures,” they complained.
The UG management has assured “students, parents and all stakeholders that fees charged for the 2022/2023 academic year are legal and duly based on approved fee levels as authorised by Parliament.”
A statement issued by the University of Ghana on Monday, 2 January 2023, signed by its Registrar, Emelia Agyei-Mensah said the increment was effected based on the 15 percent approved by Parliament on the initial 5 percent for the 2019/2020 academic year.
