The Municipal Chief Executive for the Ketu South Municipal Assembly Elliot Edem Agbenorwu has revealed that the assembly, through the decentralized government scholarship has given educational support to some 40 students in tertiary institutions across the country.
According to the MCE, a total of Ghc 80,000.00 has been spent on the payment of school fees of students; comprising 27 males and 13 females from the municipality for the 2019/20 academic year.
Mr. Agbenorwu made this known, when he addressed the media at the assembly, on Thursday 20 February, 2020.
“Let me take the opportunity to inform the general public through this medium that, the Nana Addo led administration is committed to the education of the Ghanaian youth. It is for this reason that the government has decentralized scholarship and in the Ketu South alone, a total of Ghc 80,000.00 has been spent on 40 students in tertiary institutions across the country,” he noted.
He added that “the good thing about the decentralized government scholarship is that, it caters for the entire duration of the education of the beneficiary; we pay your fees from level 100 to the very last level of your university or college education”.
The MCE, however, dispelled rumours that beneficiaries of the facility were party members who were handpicked.
He told journalists that the availability of the fund was publicly advertised, after which persons who applied were selected on merit.
Statistics available, also show that the assembly has spent a total of Ghc 46,765.00 of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) for the payment of fees for some 102 tertiary students between 2017-19.
According to Agbenorwu, the municipality has seen a significant increase in the number of SHS students through the Free SHS policy, thus, he is optimistic the applicants for financial support would increase for the subsequent academic years.
