V/R: Rotary Club of Accra-East commissions 12-seater toilet facility at Atiavi

The Rotary Club of Accra-East has built and commissioned a 12-seater ultra-modern toilet facility with girls’ changing room for the Atiavi Agbodekor RC school in Keta Municipality of the Volta region.

The facility which has since been handed over to the school would help address the sanitation and hygiene challenges that have hampered academic activities in the community over the years.

Speaking at an event organised to commission the facility, President of the Rotary Club of Accra-East, Francis Samuel Godwyll urged the community and the school to put the facility to good use and also ensure proper maintenance.

“In Atiavi, we found the need to assist the community because they have a hygiene issue. So this is a water and sanitation project mingled with education.”

“Because of the hygiene issues, absenteeism is on the high in the school. When the girls are in their menses, they don’t come to school at all and that obviously affects their education,” he recounted.

The headmaster of the school, Mr. Numana thanked the club for the initiative and noted that it will help bring more learners to the school.

“We had a toilet facility that the children were using but they get scared when they go to toilet because it was not properly made for their usage. This new facility will bring more learners to the school because it has a place for special hygiene for the girls which will help them not to shy away from going through their normal monthly routine,” Mr. Numana said.

He pledged his support for the maintenance of the facility and urged other benevolent organizations and individuals to emulate the gesture extended to the school by the Rotary Club of Accra-East.

The commissioning of the facility was preceeded with the donation of a photo-therapy equipment to the Sacred Heart Catholic hospital at Abor also within the Municipality to help fight neonatal jaundice and other activities including career guidance and counselling for the pupils, book donation to the school and a health screening for residents of the Agbodekor community.

The project was supported by partners from the Rotary Club of Woodbridge, Canada, Rotary Club Pleasanton California, USA, Ernest Chemist and other corporate bodies and individuals.

Rotary International is an international service organisation with a stated purpose to bring together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian service and advance goodwill and peace around the world.

The club is a non-political and non-religious organisation and open to all. Rotary International is composed of over 46,000 member clubs located worldwide with a collective membership of about 1.4million individuals.
