Press Secretary and Spokesperson to the Vice President, Ama Pratt, says Vice President Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang believes in practical solutions.
Speaking on State of Affairs with Joshua Kodjo Mensah, Pratt emphasized the significance of Ghana’s first female Vice President and the expectations that come with the position.
“It’s an immense responsibility. The expectations are high not just from politicians, but from feminist organizations, market traders, and the entire nation. Yet, she carries it as though she’s the 50th female vice president, not the first,” Madama Pratt remarked.
She highlighted how Vice President Opoku-Agyemang has seamlessly transitioned into the role, engaging stakeholders, addressing national issues, and setting new benchmarks in governance. According to Pratt, the Vice President’s daily schedule is a testament to her commitment, recalling a recent engagement with visitors from Harvard Kennedy School, where she spent hours answering questions with poise and confidence.
Reflecting on the Vice President’s journey, Pratt noted that her presence in Ghana’s political landscape is a monumental shift.
“We are almost three months in, and every day feels like a history-making moment. From her inauguration to chairing key national councils, she continues to break barriers,” she said.
One of the major milestones in the Vice President’s tenure so far is her appointment as the first female Chairperson of the Ghana Armed Forces Council. Pratt expressed admiration for her leadership in this role, highlighting her vision for leveraging the Armed Forces’ potential beyond security to contribute to industrial development and food production.
Beyond breaking glass ceilings, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang is also focused on key policy areas, including education, health, and gender advocacy. Her push for the Women’s Development Bank and the nationwide distribution of free sanitary pads to schoolgirls underscores her commitment to women’s empowerment and social development.
“She is not just about equality for the sake of it,” Pratt added. “She believes in practical solutions that drive national progress. It’s not just about women at the table; it’s about making an impact.”
As the administration moves forward, Pratt is confident that the Vice President’s legacy will be one of excellence, transformation, and inspiration for young girls across the country.
“She has to succeed. It is our responsibility to ensure that she does because when she succeeds, we all succeed,” she concluded.
