The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has lashed out at the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for neglecting roads in the Mpohor District, questioning its claim of constructing 12,000 kilometers of roads across the country.
The former president’s comments follow concerns by the Queenmother of the area over developmental deficits and the destruction of farmlands and waterbodies by illegal mining operations.
Reacting to these concerns during a community engagement at Dominase in the Mpohor-Fiase constituency as part of his campaign tour of the Western Region, the NDC leader said it was unfortunate the government had failed to complete roads projects in the area in his tenure before leaving office in January 2017.
“I’ve been here several times but on my way here today I noticed the deplorable state of our roads. Since the NPP came to power they have always been touting every year as “Year of Roads” and what I want to ask is, Are the Mpohor roads not part of the “Year of Roads” agenda?” he asked.
Mr. Mahama also sarcastically asked if the area had a representative in Parliament, an attempt to jab the incumbent MP for Mpohor, John Kobina Sanie who was elected on the ticket of the NPP.
The New Patriotic Party government has insisted that it has constructed over 12,000 kilometers of roads across the length and breadth of the country.
The claim is a frequent subject of attack for former President Mahama who has rubbished it as he says he has travelled to many places that have seen very little or no road construction since the ruling party took office in 2017.
