The Vice Presidential candidate for the NPP, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh also known as NAPO has urged Ghanaians to refrain from adding to religious intolerance in the country.
The 2024 Peace Campaign, spearheaded by prominent religious figures was held at the State House and aimed at promoting and encouraging peace in the country ahead of the upcoming elections.
The campaign, themed “Let Peace Prevail” (Mathew 5:9), brought together key stakeholders, including the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, Christian Council of Ghana, National Association of Charismatic Christian Churches, Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, the Office of the National Chief Imam, as well as political actors.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Prempeh stated, “Campaigns are contests of ideas to gain the people’s mandate to form a government, and the NPP firmly believes peace is paramount. We in the NPP have always been resolute in our conviction that this country’s peace is of utmost importance. Elections are about contesting ideas to lead the country.”
Dr. Prempeh further cautioned against fueling religious intolerance, citing Ghana’s long history of tolerance since the Gold Coast era. He pledged to advocate for peace, sign the Peace Accord, and ensure laws promote peace.
“Let us not fan the flames of religious intolerance. We are committed to speaking about peace, signing the Peace Accord, and ensuring laws work to maintain peace,” he noted.
He also condemned the Bawku dispute and the gathering of political vigilantes, stressing the need for peace.
