The National Food Suppliers Association says the association is waiting for a purchasing order from the government to enable members to supply food to Senior High Schools.
This follows a report of food shortages in senior high schools across the country. Amidst calls for closure for schools until the crisis is resolved, The association says it has food in stock and therefore wants a purchasing order.
Speaking to GHOne News, President of the Association, Thomas Awuah said members are ready to ensure food is distributed by Monday to all senior High Schools.
“National Food Suppliers Association, we supply the food, and the government has changed, so we’re waiting for a purchase order from the new government because we have food in stock; we have everything, all the food items. But you can’t just get up and go to Accra Academy and say, ‘I’m a supplier, I’m bringing 2,000 bags of rice’; who gave you that order? So that’s what we’re waiting for; we’re waiting for the green light that ‘go ahead, do this, do that’—and we can supply.
“We have the money; we have food in stock; everything is there. But we can’t just go and supply without any order, authorization from a minister or director, or whatever; we’re waiting. We’re ever ready; even today, if they give us the green light, I can assure you we can supply every school in every part of Ghana by Monday,” Mr. Awuah said.
The President also cautioned the government to act swiftly, citing growing complaints and the association’s preparedness.
He explained, “It should be as soon as possible because the complaints we’re getting are getting out of hand, and for the government to get its peace of mind, while there’s no money in the system, fortunately, we, the suppliers, have the money, and we have food in stock; we’re just waiting for that ‘go,’ and everything will go.”
