Vivo Energy Ghana, the sole distributor and marketer of Shell branded products and lubricants, has resourced the New Takoradi Community Library with over one thousand (1000) Ghana Education Service (GES) approved literature books to promote academic excellence within the fishing community and its environs.

The collection of storybooks written, illustrated and published by Ghanaian authors, include titles such as The Cock Crow and Commentary; Long vacation encounters, The Forest Village, The rescue, The Minister’s Daughter, The Come Back, Mission Accomplished, Wounded Stranger and a host of other exciting literature books.

Prior to this presentation, the company had donated over 2000 library books to the Ghana Education Service, Accra Sempe ‘1’ A and B Primary and KG School and Anum Primary and JHS School in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The gesture is in line with Vivo Energy’s commitment to improve academic standards in rural communities under its broader education programme dubbed the ‘Energy for Education Project’.

In a speech read on behalf of the Managing Director, the Corporate Communications Manager of Vivo Energy Ghana, Mrs. Shirley Tony Kum invited the school children and the community to utilise the books and preserve them for the benefit of future generations.

Recounting the significant role education plays in the development of a country, Mrs. Tony Kum charged them to continue to read and study for higher academic success.

We understand the important role education plays in the development of a country. However in our part of the world, children’s books – which are a key resource in education – are not always readily available.  This can sometimes rob children of an enriching education during childhood. In the case of our neighbouring schools, this could become the case if their libraries are not filled with good story books which will stimulate and develop their imagination”, she said.

The Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolitan Director of Education, Mrs. Elizabeth Akuako said “Education is the light that illuminate the world and without it people would be living in darkness”. She was therefore grateful to Vivo Energy Ghana for resourcing the library which, for many years, has not been restocked after its construction. The educationist further pleaded with patrons of the library to take good care of the books and read wide to broaden their knowledge.

The Chief of New Takoradi, Nana Abaka 1 on his part advised parents to desist from the practice of burdening the school children with domestic activities at the expense of their education. He advised the parents to devote time for their children to frequent the library to enhance their education.
