Dozens of passengers are reportedly stranded on the Kpassa-Damanko section of the Eastern Corridor road following the collapse of a bridge along the stretch in the northern part of the Volta region.
Starr News understands the makeshift bridge meant for the passage of light weight vehicles across the Lornkor stream near Sibi-Damanko in the Nkwanta North District, caved in after a heavy duty truck attempted using it on Thursday.
The situation has left many vehicles plying the Northern region via the famous eastern corridor road stranded at both ends of the river.
Two of the stranded travelers told Starr News’ regional correspondent, Lambert Atsivor, that over 200 passengers have been inconvenienced by the incident.
“We’ve traveled from Hohoe to the Nkwanta North district for a research but when we got to the Sibi-Damanko road, we were told the improvised bridge for the use of small cars collapsed because a bigger vehicle tried using it. As I speak now, they’re trying to pull the truck out of the water, and the rest of us, including people going to Tamale, Kumasi and other places up North are stranded here,” a passenger narrated to Starr news.
The incident is also said to have created a boom market for some young people in the area as they carry individual passengers across the stream for a fee.
Meanwhile, Starr News has gathered that a permanent bridge across the stream has been under construction for some time now.
