A middle-aged fisherman identified as Joshua is gone missing on the high seas of Ghana, Western Regional public relations officer for the Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council, John Dickson Eshun has told Empire News.
He told Empire FM’s Emmanuel Ohene-Gyan that Joshua was in the company of four other fishermen from Axim in the Nzema East Municipality on their usual hook and line fishing expedition when they caught a big Tuna.
The trapped tuna reportedly struggled with the fishermen and gradually took them close to ENI’s Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel.
Joshua, now deceased, who was said to be the leader on board their canoe sensing danger was advised to cut the line to allow the tune to go but ignored the warning.
“The tuna struggled with them and tangled their line around the propeller, in all these struggles I’m told the weather was bad, when they realised danger was ahead they attempted to switch on their outboard motor but it did not work because of the line that had entangled the propeller”, Mr Eshun revealed
According to him, an official of ENI identified as Karikari told him that their canoe run into the FPSO John Agyekum Kuffour and crashed beyond recognition and repairs.
“Joshua got drowned in the process without getting the Tuna while the other four managed to survive until the next morning where an ENI patrolling boat spotted them to rescue them” .
Some few weeks ago, a South African national on board FPSO Kwame Nkrumah attempted suicide after his bosses refused to allow him to go back to his home country after this contract expired.
Ohene-Gyan also reported that incursions around Safety zones is said to be on the increase.
