A former Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the University of Developmental Studies Prof David Miller has called on authorities to be lenient in disciplining students who engaged in violence in the ongoing WASSCE.
On Thursday, a reporter with the Daily Graphic in Koforidua, Damalie Emmanuel Pacome, was attacked by students of Bright Senior High School in Akyem Kukurantumi.
The students holding knives, cutlasses, sticks and stones chased the Journalist who was in the school to verify reports of attacks on invigilators by the students.
Similarly, the students also clashed with invigilators over alleged intimidation.
By Prof Miller on the Morning Starr today August 8 said the kind of punishment shouldn’t be disheartening.
He said “it should be like action that will make them still be useful to society. Because if we take an action that can backfire in our faces, our hands are going to be full.”
Already they are in a place where there are rules and regulations. So, if we throw them out there and there are no rules and regulations governing what ever they will be doing out there, our hands will be full.”
He added “so, let’s think beyond them and think of us as well. So, this will be one criteria for mitigating the sort of punishment we should give them. Punishment, yes but it shouldn’t be such that it will destroy them for the rest of the future.’
