The Minority in Parliament, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has strongly objected to Speaker Alban Bagbin’s description of their caucus as a ‘micro-minority.’
The protest, which occurred on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, during a parliamentary session, has sparked significant discontent within the NPP caucus.
The protest came after Speaker Bagbin, in the process of correcting the Votes and Proceedings, referred to the NPP Members of Parliament as a ‘micro-minority’ while discussing his duty to ‘protect’ them.
Afenyo-Markin expressed the Minority’s dissatisfaction with the term, calling it inappropriate and disrespectful.
He insisted that insisting that such a term is not recognized by the rules of the House, which only acknowledges the “Minority” and “Majority” in parliamentary discourse.
“Mr Speaker, we do not have any micro minority. Mr Speaker, the minority caucus hereby protests the description given to us by Mr Speaker.”
“Mr Speaker, we seconded the motion for your election. When the so-called majority was even conspiring against you, we protested. We stopped them from that conspiracy. Mr Speaker, it was us, the minority of conscience,” he continued.
In response, Speaker Bagbin acknowledged the Minority’s concerns, admitting that the term “micro-minority” is not officially recognized in the House.
However, the Speaker clarified that while the term should not be used in formal records or by him, it could still be used by the Leaders in their discussions.
