Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has slammed the Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for failing to fulfill his earlier promise to ensure the return of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to Ghana by May 2025.
The criticism came during a heated session on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, where Ayariga expressed deep frustration over the continued absence of Mr. Ofori-Atta, who is wanted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in connection with ongoing corruption investigations.
Afenyo-Markin had, on February 18, assured Parliament that Ofori-Atta—who was reportedly abroad for medical treatment—would return by May to cooperate with authorities.
However, his failure to appear has prompted Ayariga to question not only the credibility of that commitment but also the Minority Leader’s integrity.
The Majority Leader accused Afenyo-Markin of repeatedly making hollow assurances and undermining the trust of the House.
Ayariga said, “Mr. Speaker, if I may say — referring to Afenyo-Markin — he promised this House that he would bring Ken Ofori-Atta in May. We are now in June. Where is Ken Ofori-Atta? Where is Ken? Where is Ken? You promised us that you would bring Ken to this House. You came here and made a promise. You stood on this floor and assured us that he would return in May. Now we are in June — where is Ken Ofori-Atta? Mr. Speaker, he should no longer be heard in this House. When he makes promises, he does not fulfill them. He comes here, makes statements, and never follows through — and yet he questions the promises of others.”
