Naval Lieutenant Ewuradjoa Kumi Kyereme, widow of the late Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, one of the eight victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region, has delivered an emotional tribute to her husband, recalling their deep bond and the pain of his sudden loss.
Speaking through tears at the State funeral at Black Star Square in Accra, Lt. Kyereme described the moment she received the devastating news on the evening of August 6.
“I looked outside and I saw a ridiculously beautiful sunset. And I thought to myself, how dare the world continue… how dare everyone go about their evening, when I didn’t know what to do with myself. My husband was my everything.”
She recounted how they met in 2022 on his birthday, and from that day became inseparable, often drawing remarks from friends about how much time they spent together.

“Everywhere I am, my husband wants to be there with me. But only we understand what we had. Only we know the depth of what we experience.”
In her tribute, she addressed her late husband directly, voicing her grief:

“Manaen, what is this grief and what am I supposed to do with it? Who will respond ‘gist’ when I say ‘kase gist’? This silence is too loud. I keep checking my phone for a message, or a picture or a call… I’ve been waiting since Wednesday.”
Lt. Kyereme promised to keep his memory alive, describing him as considerate, attentive, goofy, and deeply caring.
“People say I am carrying this thing well, but I am here because you loved me and you loved me well. My correct better half, my lover, and my best friend… I hope you know I love you a lot more than these words can convey. My forever and a day. Sleep well, my love.”
Flying Officer Ampadu, a co-pilot in the Ghana Air Force, died alongside Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, former Ashanti Regional Minister and NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Obuasi East parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, when their Z-9 military helicopter went down in Adansi Akrofuom.
The State funeral, attended by President John Mahama, top government officials, security chiefs, religious leaders, and thousands of citizens, is being held to honour the high-profile public servants and military officers who perished in the tragedy.
