Winfried Schäfer, the newly appointed technical advisor for the Black Stars, has arrived in Ghana as the team steps up preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The experienced German coach, who led Cameroon to victory in the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), arrived in Ghana on Monday. He was received by Desmond Ofei, the assistant coach of the senior national team.
The Ghana Football Association has strengthened the Black Stars’ coaching team to enhance their technical setup and secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup.
This follows Otto Addo’s inability to secure Ghana’s qualification for the 2025 AFCON, marking the team’s first absence from the tournament in 20 years.
In addition to his advisory role with the Black Stars, Schäfer will take on the position of technical director at the GFA, bringing over 40 years of managerial experience to the team.
Furthermore, the newly appointed team psychologist, Kris Perquy, and video analyst, Gregory De Grauwe, are set to arrive in Ghana in the coming days.
Next month, the Black Stars will continue their qualifying campaign with pivotal Matchday 5 and 6 encounters against Chad and Madagascar.
