Former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has criticized Dr. Dominic Ayine, over the discontinuation of multiple high-profile criminal cases involving members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Addressing the media on February 14, 2025, at Accra City Hotel, Mr Dame accused the NDC government of arranging a political ploy to “whitewash” its members by using the Attorney-General’s Office to withdraw cases rather than allowing the judicial process to determine their guilt or innocence.
Mr. Dame condemned Dr. Ayine for allegedly maligning the judiciary while justifying the case withdrawals. According to him, Ayine’s criticisms of past judicial rulings were part of a larger strategy to shift blame away from the NDC’s decision to drop cases.
“The judiciary was not spared from the Attorney-General’s unwarranted scathing attacks, as some members were subjected to disparaging remarks under the guise of assigning reasons for his decisions,” Dame argued.
Dame rejected Ayine’s justification that some cases were flawed due to defects in the charges. “The prosecution of crime is not an arena to achieve political equalization
Dame warned that the manner in which the NDC government was handling criminal prosecutions threatened the credibility of Ghana’s justice system.
” The people of Ghana should be very scared if we have an Attorney-General whose prime consideration for the discontinuation of criminal cases involving the loss of billions of Ghana Cedis is, the position of defence lawyers on charges preferred against their clients rather than the interests of the Republic in the prosecution of crime,” he remarked.
