The Youth and Sports Minister-designate, Isaac Asiamah has stated that he will insist as minister that all programmes and budgets of the Ghana Football Association go through the National Sports Authority.
This, according to him, would ensure the GFA is answerable to the tax payer.
He made this known on Tuesday when he appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament.
“I want to make this clear, Mr. Chairman, when I’m confirmed by this august House as minister, I will not be dealing directly with the GFA. This point should be made clear to everybody,” he told the twenty-six member Committee led by Joe Osei Owusu.
“The GFA should route all their programmes through the National Sports Authority before it comes to my desk. Hence, I will not be dealing directly with the GFA…the law is very clear. The GFA must route all their programmes and it should be sanctioned by the National Sports Authority before the minister comes in,” he added.
He said it was unfortunate for the sector Minister to be negotiating bonuses with the National teams noting that “it doesn’t have to happen…there are bodies who are supposed to do that. So we need to strengthen our [structures] so that we can fight corruption.”
Also, he pledged to rid the Ministry of its corruption tag arguing that “a leader must ensure there’s transparency and accountability in everything that is done.”
He thus stated that his kind of leadership “will be one that will fight corruption.”
