You have by Sept. 15 to resume work on V/R roads – Group to Govt

A group in the Volta Region calling itself ‘Fix abandoned Volta roads’ has  called on the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to send contractors back to abandoned and deplorable roads in the region or face continued street demonstrations from September 16th.

Leaders of the group, Joshua Edem Tetteh and Frank Torblu in a press release Tuesday September 3 gave the government up to September 15 for physical actions on the various roads or else “this demonstration on the 16th September will mark the beginning of series of demonstrations and other activities to be organised against the abandoned roads.”

“The members of the fix abandoned Volta roads and the general public are fed-up with the lip service being paid by government over the years to the abandoned roads in the region,

“…because the more the road projects delay, the more the cost increases and the more the abandoned roads deteriorate at the expense of the tax payer,” the group added.

The group made of indigenes of the Volta Region home and abroad, stated that, they will no longer mellow themselves for politicians to ride on. They said since government is a continuous projects started by previous governments needed to be continued by successive governments.

Bellow is the full release

FIX ABANDONED VOLTA ROADS CAMPAIGN

GOVERNMENT MUST BRING CONTRACTORS TO SITE BY 15TH SEPTEMBER 2019.

We the members of the fix abandoned Volta roads campaign made up of youths within and outside the region want to serve this notice to the Volta Regional minister, Dr Letsa, that we have given him and his government up to 15th September 2019 for contractors working on various roads in the region to return to site and resume work.

The members of this group and the general public are fed-up with the lip service being paid by government over the years to the abandoned roads in the region.

The road issue in the region have become very nauseating to everyone here in the Volta region, because the more the road projects delay, the more the cost increases and the more the abandoned roads further deteriorate, all at the expense of the tax payer.

As the citizens of Ghana, we would no longer allow politicians to take us for a ride. Governance is  continuous  irrespective of which government is in power, national resources must be put to judicious and efficient use, more so projects started by previous governments needed to be continued by successive governments.

We want to put on record that we have organized demonstrations in the region under various banner names in 2014 and in August 2016 concerning roads, hence demonstrations are not new to us. We have an indomitable will to succeed because our course is for the larger good.

We recall with nostalgia how Hon. Peter Amewu supported our collective course, making sure roads are fixed in the Volta region, especially the eastern corridor roads. It is therefore surprising how Hon. Peter Amewu  lost steam over this commitment when the NPP government took over power, clearly depicting the fact that the Ghanaian politician is only interested in their parochial interest rather than the collective communal good.

It is therefore clear in the minds of  members of the fix abandoned Volta roads campaign that we must not put our hope in any politician but have to take our destiny into our own hands to see this crusade of ours to its logical conclusion.

We are by this release alerting the general public to join the demonstration on the 16th of September 2019, if the government fails to bring contractors on site to fix the abandoned road projects in the region.

This demonstration on the 16th of September will mark the beginning of series of demonstrations and other activities to be organized against the abandoned roads in the region.

Come let’s put up this fight for our beloved Volta Region.

Signed

Joshua Edem Tetteh

Frank Torblu
