V/R: Justify your appointment – Minister to MMDCEs

Newly approved Municipal and District Chief Executives in the Volta region have been admonished to work hard to justify their appointments or else risk being kicked out of the President Akufo-Addo led government.

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, who gave the admonishing during the swearing-in of 16 out of the expected 25 MMDCEs in the region, said there are equally competent persons in the various districts to serve in such positions and as such appointees who fail to discharge their mandates satisfactorily, would lose the positions to others in-waiting.

Adding that, the President would not countenance any act of incompetence on the part of appointees in prosecuting his agenda of developing and transforming every part of the country.

“As you would admit, there are a significant number of interested people on the touchline ready to take-over your positions if you fail. That is enough motivation for you to perform creditably without being prodded to do your duties as expected,” the minister stated.

Dr. Letsa, in entreating the MMDCEs to immediately hit the ground running to implement the various programmes and policies of the government in their respective jurisdictions, also tasked them to abreast themselves with the various legislations governing the local governance structure in order not to fall foul of the laws of the country.

The swearing-in ceremony which took place at the Residency conference room in Ho on Monday saw the 16 MMDCEs take the oaths of Office, Allegiance and Secrecy administered by the Minister in the presence of  his Deputy, Mr. Maxwell Blagodzi and many dignitaries including traditional leaders, NPP party Stalwarts as well as families of the appointees.

Among those sworn-in, are Nelson Akorli, Seth Yormewu, Edem Elliot Agbewornu and Elvis Kweku Djampoh, all Municipal Chief Executives of Ho, Keta, Ketu South and Kpando respectively.

A former Regional Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Kenwud Nuworsu also urged the MMDCEs to strike a good balance between the government and party in order not to incur the wrath of members.

“The party is the mother of the government, and a lot of people have worked very hard for the party to be where it is now. So don’t be under any false assumption that, it is because of any exceptional qualification that you incur the pleasure of the President to represent him in the districts. You are holding these positions in trust for all of us. So don’t shut your door on any one,” he stressed.

Rejected Nominees

Meanwhile, the fates of seven MMDCEs nominees, including 3 females who were rejected during Confirmation polls held across the region last 2-weeks now lie with the President for re-nomination or otherwise.

Whiles two others, who failed the first confirmation tests, would have a second chance with their respective assemblies for their approval or otherwise within ten days, as stipulated in the Local Government Standing Orders.
