Vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Wednesday joined the Veterans Association of Ghana (VAG) to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the 28th February, 1948 Christianborg Crossroads shooting at the Nationalism Park, Osu.
Dr Bawumia laid a wreath on behalf of government and the people of Ghana while four others were laid in memory of the departed veterans who defended the nation.
On February 28, 1948, Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe and Private Odartey Lamptey of the Gold Coast Regiment of the Royal West African Frontier Force, who fought alongside the allied forces during the Second World War, were shot on the orders of British Police Superintendent Colin Imray.
The unarmed Ex-Servicemen were presenting a petition to the then British Governor Sir Geral Creasy over their unpaid benefits before meeting their untimely deaths at the crossroads
Vice president Bawumia at the brief event said the condition of the veteran soldiers is of utmost priority to government because they risked their lives to protect the country.
“Their action, no doubt reinforced the commitment of the Ghanaian people to fight for self-governance and political independence. Ghana is truly proud of them,” he stated.
The incident was one of the contributing factors leading to the attainment of political independence for Ghana on 6 March 1957.
