In the aftermath of the Uganda Cranes’ successful tour match against Northern Region at the Lango Sports Ground in Lira, head coach Moses Basena was left a delighted party.
Save for the 2-0 result on the day courtesy of a brace from KCCA forward Derrick Nsibambi, Basena is impressed by the overall display of the team bearing in mind there are several competitions lined up.
In particular, Basena eyes the on-going 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, CECAFA 2017 Regional Championship, CHAN 2018 and AFCON 2019 qualification.
“I am excited by the gradual progress of these locally based players. They are an important aspect in each of the campaigns that the national team is engaged in From the current World Cup 2018 qualification campaign to CECAFA, CHAN and AFCON 2019, these players are so important.”
Basena heaped praise on striker Derrick Nsibambi who scored twice in a space of 6 minutes with magnificent finishes inside the goal area past Sadam Ogwang.
Nsibambi had last scored for the national team against Rwanda in the final round of the 2018 CHAN qualifier at the St Mary’s stadium, Kitende with a beautiful curl outside the goal area.
“It is good that Nsibambi has rediscovered his scoring touch at a time we needed him to score. He has got the confidence and expertise to score. We hope he maintains just that,” Basena spoke of Nsibambi.
