The executive director of the National Population Council Dr. Leticia Adelaide Appiah is advocating for policies to put a check on the increasing birth rate in Ghana.
Ghana’s population rate has seen an increment from 28 million recorded in 2016 to over 29 million in the first quarter of 2018. This has resulted in Ghana’s slow rate of economic development.
Globally, growth rate stands at 1.5, however, Ghana has a growth rate of 2.5 and is an indication of the fast pace at which the country’s population surges.
Speaking in an interview with GhOne TV’s Odilia Agyeman Prempeh, Dr. Appiah warned that the trend can have an adverse effect on the country’s economic growth.
According to her, high birth rate has negative implication on the quality of life and birth control hence the need to have an ultimate factor to promote and sustain it.
She said it can also affect delivery of quality education.
