The Ministry of Education is launching a comprehensive investigation into claims made by Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, alleging that expired rice had been distributed to Senior High Schools across the country.
The Ministry in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng maintained that it was appreciative of Mr. Ablakwa’s whistleblowing on such an important matter and assured the public of its interest in getting to the bottom of the matter.
“The Ministry of Education’s attention has been drawn to allegations made by Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa regarding the supply of expired food items to some senior high schools.
“We would like to first express our appreciation to Hon. Ablakwa for bringing this matter to our attention, as such feedback is valuable in our ongoing efforts to ensure quality education,” the statement partly read.
The ministry noted it took the “allegations seriously and, as a matter of urgency” it had “commenced a full investigation”.
Mr. Kwarteng also noted that the key stakeholders involved in the distribution process, Food Buffer Stock Company and the Ghana Commodity Exchange, have been engaged as part of the ministry’s full-scale investigation.
This development follows an expose by Mr. Ablakwa on Joy FM’s Midday News to effect that some persons had connived to dispatch expired rice in repckaged bags to second cycle schools nationwide.
