A major breakthrough in Ghana’s fight against persistent power outages, commonly referred to as “dumsor,” is on the horizon as US-based engineers from Pileus Ghana Investment (PGI) unveil plans for a 500-megawatt solar energy and storage project.
In an exclusive interview with Starrfmonline, project leads Scott McHazlett and John Cliford disclosed that Ghana will be the first country in Africa to benefit from this innovative solar-plus-storage energy package, designed to provide sustainable and reliable power to the national grid.
“We’ve prepared an energy solution package for Ghana with over 500 megawatts of solar production, along with energy storage; a first of its kind for the region,” Scott stated.
The PGI team explained that the project follows years of in-depth research and groundwork. They are currently in discussions with the Ministry of Energy to finalise necessary documentation, with a key meeting scheduled for next week.
“We’re not only bringing more power, but a more stable system,” they added. “This will help stabilise the national grid and provide a roadmap for sustainable growth.”
A standout feature of the project is its use of ambient light panels, enabling efficient energy production even during overcast conditions; a key advantage for Ghana’s varied climate.
“It doesn’t have to be sunny. Our panels work with ambient light, so energy generation continues even when it’s cloudy,” Scott explained.
While the pricing for the energy generated is yet to be determined by Ghanaian authorities, PGI anticipates that the long-term impact will include reduced power outages and potential cost savings for consumers through improved efficiency and supply.
The project is expected to commence as soon as final government approvals are granted.
