The Eastern Regional Health Directorate is closely monitoring a suspected outbreak of H1N1 influenza at Anum Presbyterian and Boso Senior High Schools in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region, where 69 cases have so far been reported.
According to health officials, an initial batch of 25 samples was sent to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, with 9 testing positive for the virus.
Disease Control Officers dispatched to the school on Sunday June 29, collected an additional 44 samples for laboratory confirmation as part of the ongoing containment interventions.
Affected students have been isolated while the entire student body has been instructed to wear nose masks as a preventive measure.
H1N1, commonly known as swine flu, is a type of seasonal influenza that spreads from person to person through droplets when an infected individual coughs or sneezes.
The virus can also be transmitted by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes.
In severe cases, it can lead to hospitalization and even death.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed it is actively managing the situation and continues to monitor the health status of students and staff within the school community.
However, no directive has been issued for the temporary closure of the schools at this time.
Health officials have urged students and staff to adhere strictly to preventive protocols, including regular handwashing, wearing of nose masks, and reporting any flu-like symptoms promptly.
Management of the schools have also assured parents to remain calm as the team work to contain the situation.
