Bolt pulled up on the anchor leg for Jamaica, as the British team stunned the world at the London Stadium
Great Britain stormed to the gold medal in the 4x100m relay at the World Championships – as Usain Bolt’s career ended in injury and tears.
A British record of 37.47 seconds was the third quickest time in the history of the event, as Team GB held off the challenge of the United States.
Bolt, beaten into third in the 100m,ran the anchor leg for Jamaica, but pulled up injured as Neethaneel Mitchell-Blake drove GB to victory.
USA finished second, with a time of 37.52, while Japan took third (38.04).
CJ Ujah made a terrific start for Team GB, before Adam Gemili – making a mockery of his 200m exclusion – put Team GB in command down the back straight with a superb show of pace and power.
Danny Talbot took up the baton to keep the lead, before Mitchell-Blake held off Christian Coleman to claim gold.
“We’re world champions, world champions,” Mitchell-Blake said through tears of happiness.
The 30-year-old had attempted to get Jamaica into contention on the final leg, but just as he opened up into his long stride, he pulled up, clutching his hamstring and collapsing to the track.
His team-mates gathered round him and the 19-time global champion was helped to his feet and limped over the line, applauding the crowd as he did so.
