The Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah has rejected a request by hawkers in the Central Business district seeking an extension of a directive for them to move into the markets.
The request by the traders comes on the back of a planned decongestion exercise by the AMA in major parts of the city to rid the pedestrian walk ways off hawkers to allow free flow of traffic.
The traders have been warned to vacate the pavements before Monday January 8.
Speaking to Starr News, some traders said they need the extension to allow them sell off their Christmas goods.
But the Mayor of Accra in a response said the extension of their grace period is a difficult request to accept.
According to him, the four months’ notice given traders to vacate the pavements should be enough.
“We have given them enough time to prepare, for more than four months we have engaged them…so it is not an instant decision that we have taken,” Mr. Adjei Sowah told Starr News in an interview.
