Alumni and associates of Unity and University halls of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) will today petition the Chancellor of the University Otumfuo Osei Tutu over the conversion of the walls.
The Alumni is seeking to persuade the Otumfuo to intervene in the decision to convert the all-male halls into mixed halls.
The authorities at the KNUST have announced the conversion of the halls as part of efforts to promote inclusion at the school.
In a statement on the development, the Alumni of the affected halls said they will march today from the Kumasi Children’s Park to the Manhyia palace to present their petition in the hope that the Ashanti Monarch will intervene in the situation.
“ Students, alumni, and associates of the University Hall (KATANGA) and Unity Hall (CONTI), both of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), will be presenting a petition to OTUMFUO OSEI TUTU II, CHANCELLOR of the university about growing tension and discord regarding the proposed conversion of the two male halls into mixed gender halls.
“Stakeholders will be requesting that the Chancellor order a stay of the proposal until a meaningful and sustainable solution can be found to the perennial accommodation and security crisis on campus. Stakeholders will be converging at the Kumasi Children’s Park at 9.00am, from where they will march peacefully to the Manhyia Palace of Otumfuo to present the petition.” a statement from the Alumni said.
