The Aflao Association of North America has supported some 500 head porters (Kayaye) and persons living with disability in Aflao with food items as the closure of the Ghana-Togo border continues to deprive many residents of their livelihoods.
The donation, according to the donors, is to help the beneficiaries who have been taken out of job since the closure of the main entry points.
According to Alfred Amuzu, a resident of Washington DC and a leading member of the group, the choice of Aflao is to ensure a fair distribution since earlier donations by other groups could not cover Aflao.
“We came together and have decided that we put our resources together and then identified the porters and the physically challenged as our target beneficiary. But the choice of Aflao is to ensure a fair distribution since the earlier distribution by others could not cover them,” he said.
The beneficiaries had essential food items that included corn, rice, cooking oil and canned fish.
Reverend David Allan Ankrah who led the donation noted it was important to show love to the communities at a time that life is becoming extremely difficult for them.
“The porters are really suffering and some of them have nothing to eat. We have heard some of them share their plights on TV and as a result, the Aflao Association of North America has decided to send us some food items to be distributed to the porters at the border,” he explained.
For the PWDs, the team visited homes of the selected beneficiaries to deliver the packages to them.
The beneficiaries who were full of joy expressed gratitude to the donors for the initiative.
The country’s borders were closed on March 22, by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo following the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic in the country.
The move, according to government, was to curb cross-border importation of the virus but the decision has made a negative impact on businesses along the border communities especially areas within the Aflao enclave of the Ketu South Municipality with the affected residents calling on government and support them with relief items.
