V/R: GIS interdicts 5 officers over illegal entries

Five officers of the Ghana Immigration Service stationed at the Aflao Sector Command in the Volta region have been interdicted for allegedly facilitating the illegal entries of foreign nationals through unapproved routes on the Ghana-Togo border.

The five officers, Asst. Inspector Isaac Ahiafor Agbenyega, Asst. Inspector Sarah Adubea, ICO Juliana Anning, ICO Jennifer Owusu and R.O Joyce Nketia were interdicted on Thursday, 9 July 2020 for engaging in an act which constitutes an offence under Section 52(1) of the Ghana Immigration Act, 2000 (Act 573).

According to a statement from the GIS, their actions are not only in contravention of the Ghana Immigration Act 2000 but also amounts to a breach of the President’s directives on border closure to curb cross border spread of the deadly Covid-19.

While on interdiction, the officers are entitled two thirds (2/3) of their salaries; the statement added.

Confirming the news, Sector Commander C/Supt. Frederick Doudu told Starr News’ Faisel Abdul-Iddrisu that the service would always take measures to uphold its integrity by instituting disciplinary action against such reckless individuals.

He said, “As professionals, we are reminded to always act within the ethics of the Ghana Immigration Service and that they are aware. We remind them of all these whenever they are being deployed and they are aware of the consequences that come with any negative behaviour.”

He added, however, that, the actions of these five officers can not be seen as an indictment on the entire service.

“This however should not go to discredit the hard-work and commitment of the many other officers and the entire Ghana Immigration Service. I believe in every profession, there are these elements of people who become irresponsible and deviate from the ethics and that is what I believe have just happened with these officers,” he emphasised.

Since the closure of Ghanaian borders by President Nana Akuffo-Addo in March this year, reports have become rift on immigration officials aiding travelers across our borders for a fee especially in the Akanu and Aflao Sectors on the Ghana-Togo border -an allegation the service has always refuted while opening the door for proof to enable them nip these recalcitrant officials.
