Lab scientists end two-week strike

Lab scientists in public hospitals have returned to work today after calling off their two-week-old strike.

The lab scientists who were protesting the appointment of some medical officers to head some laboratories have suspended the action after petitioning the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health.

It’s unclear if they will avail themselves for today’s meeting with the National Labour Commission that also secured a court order, for the strike to end.

In an interview, the National President of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists Dr. Abu Abudu Rahamani told Starr News they are counting on the health committee to address their grievances.

He said, “the consultant medical laboratory scientist who has been acting for the past 6 years, should have his appointment confirmed immediately and the fact that we want the laboratory department or the laboratory directorate to be separated from the psychology directorate so that at least everyone can go his or her lane and where we need to collaborate, we can collaborate.”

He added that “the fact that ministry should put in structures that will ensure that medical laboratory scientists report to their fellow laboratory scientists and also have the opportunity to go through both the technical and administrative ladder”.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Medical Association has given the assurance that the development will not mar the relationship between the laboratory scientists and its members.

Speaking with Starr News, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the GMA Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo said “we don’t have any problem with anybody and we will never have any problem with anybody because per our training, we are trained to go to withstand and accommodate all manner of people that is the training we go through as doctors from the medical school”.

He added, “if the leader of that strike comes to me right now with a medical condition, I will smile and treat him because he is a human being and per by training we should not discriminate against anybody by virtue of beliefs, religion, tribe or nationality”.

He went on to say that, the GMA has no problem and we will never have any problem working with anybody.
