Christmas events in Review: The peace and memories created

Ghana has unarguably become one of the hottest destinations to visit for the holidays. “December in Ghana” is a phrase that has begun to ring bells all around the world, and it’s associated with the best parties, star-studded concerts, and nightlife that doesn’t slow down until the sun breaks through the clouds the next morning.

A rapidly growing percentage of the African diaspora and even holiday tourists, in general, have made the warm coastline country their destination of choice for end-of-year festivities, and rightly so. From the BHIM concert to the Freedom Rave to Rapperholic, there have been several hot spots and lit events that have become known for providing only the best of entertainment to the lucky fun lovers and partygoers who are present.

This season, the majority of the major events focused on bringing artists together and creating unforgettable memories for fans, such as;

BHIM Concert: Held at the Grand Arena, Accra International Conference Center (AICC) in Accra and presented by Stonebwoy’s Burniton Music Group, in association with Beyond The Return, Ghana, the 2021 edition of the Bhim Concert was a resounding success due to the organizers’ extensive planning, precise execution, and the headliner’s resilient, charismatic talents.

Ahead of the Ghanaian BET and GRAMMY awardee’s set, Bhim Concert 2021 opened with a stellar cast of supporting acts, including Taalat Yarky, Kofi Jamar, Quamina MP, Dope Nation, Sefa, Okese 1, Mr Drew, Edem, Joyce Blessing and more. Kofi Kinaata elevated the thousand-person audience’s already jubilant mood with ethereal and fitting performances of his hits “Behind The Scenes” and “Confessions.” Fameye, during his live set, matched the high level of energy created by the audience.

Stonebwoy’s set also featured some of his collaborators, including Vic Mensa, Joey B, Darko Vibes, Yaa Pono, Focalistic, and D BLack.

On the night, Stonebwoy brought Grammy award-winning Jamaican artiste, Beenie Man, out. The King of the Dancehall came out to deliver an energetic performance of “Punnany”, “Playground”, “Overproof”, “One Day”, and “Unstoppable”. It marked his first Ghanaian performance in close to three decades since he last visited the motherland. And for the first time also, he performed his 2019 collaborative single “Shuga” with Stonebwoy.

The major highlight was when Stonebwoy introduced Samini on stage. The moment between them was pure love. During a quick personal moment on stage, patrons got a peak at the mutual respect and love the two share. They shared the stage with King Beenie Man and exhibited their musical prowess by spitting out some unmatched freestyles.

Rapperholic Concert: The 2021 edition of the Rapperholic Concert saw a lot of surprises, but one that has generated a lot of buzz is Sarkodie’s performance with Obrafour. Midway through his performance, he invited Obrafour to the stage to join him to perform their collaborations. And when Obrafour stepped on the stage, Sarkodie bowed down to him. This is the second time Sarkodie has shown this gesture.

In 2016, Sarkodie paused during his performance at the Rapperholic concert to show some respect to Obrafour. Sarkodie has always idolised Obrafour for influencing his rap career.

Explaining why he admires Obrafour in a 2013 interview, he stated that: “Obrafour is not profane. He does not use profane lyrics like we young ones do these days, but he is still relevant, and I like him for that.

Sarkodie and Obrafour have collaborated on a good number of hot records.

In 2010, Sarkodie featured Obrafour on his hit song “Life,” and in 2015, he featured the legend on “Always On My Mind” off his “Mary” album. He also signed him for “Saa Okodie No,” which was released in 2016, and “Hope,” which was released in 2018.

Obrafour also got Sarkodie for his hit single “Moesha,” released in 2018.

Samini Xperience: One of the unforgettable memories happened at Samini Xperience. The Ghanaian reggae-dancehall legend Samini received the surprise of his career when his former co-star K.K. Fosu jumped on stage at the just-ended Samini Xperience Concert.

The surprise happened when he announced his yet-to-be-launched ‘Pitoo the Bottle,’ after dropping many hit songs during his performance.

The report says Samini heard familiar instrumentation that made him stop his performance to say: “This beat is familiar.”.

A stunned Samini continued to look at the band members to ask what was going on and was surprised to see his former label partner K.K. Fosu appear on stage.

For those who are familiar with the impasse between the two, Samini knelt right in the direction of K.K. Fosu when Fosu gave him an oblique pat on the back. The duo then proceeded to sing one of their most popular singles, Sudwe.

Freedom Wave: Shatta Wale and Medikal got a mammoth crowd of about 40,000 fans to the Accra Sports Stadium. The Ghanaian music stars jointly pulled a huge crowd to the Accra Sports Stadium on Christmas Day.

The duo’s first joint concert, dubbed ‘Freedom Wave’ brought together fans from the SM4Lyf Family and MDK fan base. A video shared by Shatta Wale on his Instagram showed their fans filling up the 40,000-capacity Accra Sports Stadium.

The ‘Freedom Wave’ concert featured a long list of guest artistes, including Fameye, Wendy Shay, Kelvyn Boy, Black Sherif, Mr Drew, and Hajia4Reall.

Shatta Wale said the show was a big success. “It’s God. “#Freedomwave Big Success,” he captioned a photo on Instagram.

Medikal, on the other hand, expressed gratitude to his fans and supporting artists.”History was made last night! Congratulations, AMG SM DTB!Big thanks to every artist who came to support, big thanks to the fans. We love y’all die,” Medikal noted.

‘Freedom Wave’ was inspired by Shatta Wale and Medikal’s recent battle with the law. The two were recently arrested and charged with separate crimes.

Shatta Wale was arrested in October for faking a shooting incident. And for Medikal, he was arrested for brandishing a gun on social media.

Festival of Lights: The first-ever Festival of Lights in Ghana, a two-day event, commenced on Wednesday, December 22 and ended on December 23.

The event had a great number of attendees, superb performances from dancers, live band performances, and a mesmerizing display from acrobatic dancers.

Attendees walked through attractions like the village Nativity Scene, the Tunnel of Lights, and experienced the Village of Light, live band performances, a play palace to celebrate magical moments created for little ones, fireworks, or sky lanterns, lighting up the skies of Accra, and also light painting and photo booths.

There was a massive display of cultural artefacts from vendors, food, and other amazing sights like fireworks to entertain attendees.

The event, held at Independence Square, Accra, had a live performance from one of the hottest Ghanaian artists, EL, Kofi Jamar, and also OJ Black.

This event was brought together by KAPT LLC and Nebular Group in partnership with Beyond The Return, the National Folklore Board, and the Office of Diaspora Affairs and powered by Empire Ghana.

GTCO Music Concert: Ghana and Nigeria were again reunited on one stage as artistes from both countries thrilled patrons at the GTCO Music Concert which kicked off at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, December 17.

The concert, organised by GT Bank, explored the joys of music and celebrated the beauty in diversity with the likes of Davido, Adekunle Gold, Wande Coal, Niniola and Buju TYE representing Nigeria and Ghanaian artistes like Kuami Eugene, Stonebwoy, Gyakie, Adina, and R2Bees among others.

Even though the event did not start at the scheduled time, the wait was worth it as the artistes treated patrons to some wonderful tunes from their collections.

Kuami Eugene performed songs such as Angela, Bunker, Tena Fie, and Open Gate, among others. His energy on stage was on another level and he made sure he engaged his fans. From how the crowd cheered him on and sang his songs word for word, it was obvious that they had fun.

Stonebwoy, who was advertised as one of the big acts on the night, did not disappoint. He got the place charged with some freestyle before he got on stage and it was welcomed with a lot of cheers and screams from the crowd. He also performed some of his songs, such as Shuga, Run Go, Putuu and Ololo. The icing on the cake was when he performed his “Activate” song with Davido, who he featured on that song.

His entry alone shook the stadium, almost as if the crowd did not believe it was him because, though he had been announced as a performing act, not much had been heard of him in terms of publicity for the show, so it was a different feel when Davido appeared on stage.

From his looks, it was obvious that he came there to have fun and entertain those gathered, and he did just that. Some of the songs he performed included Assurance, Fem, Fall On You, Jowo, etc.

Ghana’s self-acclaimed songbird Gyakie was good on the night. With her soft, smooth, deep voice, she got the crowd excited.

Performances by R2bees, Adina, Kofi Kinaata, Adekunle Gold, Wande Coal, Niniola, and Buju TYE were also great.
