John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has openly criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s handling of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy. His remarks came in response to the president’s recent challenge for Mahama to clarify his position on key national issues, including the Free SHS policy.
Speaking to supporters in Ningo Prampram on Thursday, Mahama expressed frustration over what he described as the president’s failure to acknowledge his previously stated views. He suggested that Akufo-Addo was either ignoring or unaware of his clear positions on the Free SHS program and the ongoing galamsey (illegal mining) crisis.
Mahama reiterated his long-standing critique of the Free SHS policy, particularly its implementation. “There are implementational problems with the Free SHS. One, there is no dedicated funding. Two, parents are not happy with the double-track system. Three, the quality of food the children are being given is not good,” Mahama said. He promised that an NDC government would address these issues.
Regarding the galamsey crisis, Mahama emphasized that his stance on the matter had also been made clear multiple times. He lamented that despite public concerns, the destruction caused by illegal mining continues to plague several regions in Ghana.
Mahama’s remarks are the latest in a series of exchanges between the NDC leader and President Akufo-Addo as the 2024 elections approach, with both parties expected to intensify their engagement on national policy issues.
