Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Member of Parliament for Mion, Mohammed Abdul-Aziz, has refuted the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) claims that voter apathy was solely responsible for their electoral defeat.
He argued that the NDC also experienced a decline in voter turnout.
Speaking on GHOne TV with Lily Mohammed on December 16, 2024, the former lawmaker acknowledged the widespread voter apathy in the just ended December 7th general elections.
Mr. Aziz asserted that the NDC’s significant victory was not simply a consequence of this phenomenon.
Comparing the NDC’s vote totals from 2016 and 2020, he noted that a continuation of this trend should have resulted in even higher numbers in 2024. Instead, the party experienced a decrease, indicating that the NDC also faced challenges in mobilizing its base.
He explained, “The NPP is not the only party that suffered voter apathy. The NDC also suffered. The NDC increased votes from over four million in 2016 to over six million in 2020—an increase of about 1.8 million votes—but increased by only over one hundred thousand from 2020. If we were to increase our votes in 2024 like in 2016 and 2020, we would have gotten over eight million votes in 2024. So, the NDC also suffered voter apathy.”
