President John Dramani Mahama has firmly stated that Ghana did not experience power rationing between January 2016 and January 2017, emphasizing that he successfully resolved the country’s severe power crisis, popularly known as “dumsor,” before leaving office.
Speaking at his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) since his re-election, Mahama recalled his efforts in tackling the persistent energy crisis that plagued Ghana for years. “Yesterday, February 27, 2025, marks exactly ten years since I stood in this chamber, at this very spot, to declare my determination to fix dumsor, a legacy problem of power shortages. And, Mr. Speaker, I fixed it,” he stated.
The President reiterated that from the beginning of 2016 until his departure from office in January 2017, Ghana enjoyed stable electricity supply, contrary to claims of continued power challenges during his tenure. “I wish to place firmly on record that from January 2016 until I handed over the administration of this country on January 7, 2017, there was no power rationing or load management in Ghana,” he declared.
Mahama’s statement comes at a time when concerns over energy stability remain a major issue in the country. While acknowledging the current challenges in the energy sector, he assured Ghanaians that his administration is committed to fixing the economic crisis with the same determination that ended dumsor a decade ago.
“Today, inspired by the Almighty God and propelled by the massive mandate given to me by the good people of Ghana, I am moved to make a similar, purposeful, and bold declaration, that I, John Dramani Mahama, will fix the economic crisis confronting our country and reset it on the path of growth and prosperity,” he assured.
