The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Amasaman Constituency Communications Directorate has called on the Ghana Police Service to investigate remarks made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Amasaman Constituency Communications Officer, Daniel Nortey, during a television discussion on alleged sexual abuse involving 19 female students.
In a press release dated October 21, 2026, the NPP described Mr Nortey’s comments on ATV’s Anopa Bosuo Political Show on Tuesday, October 20, as disturbing, arguing that they appeared to trivialise sexual violence.
The remarks were made during a discussion of the case involving Zakaria Abdulai, the suspended headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) and serving NDC Juaben Constituency Secretary, who is reportedly under investigation over allegations of sexual abuse involving 19 female students.
According to the NPP, Mr Nortey appeared to defend the alleged perpetrator during the broadcast, making comments that questioned the seriousness of rape and suggested that a transaction precedes the act.
The party said the remarks raised concerns about public understanding of sexual violence and the responsibility expected of individuals holding political communication positions.
It has therefore urged the Ghana Police Service to investigate Mr Nortey’s comments and determine whether there are lawful grounds for further action.
NPP urges NDC to take disciplinary action
The NPP Amasaman Communications Directorate has also called on the NDC leadership to take appropriate disciplinary action against Mr Nortey, including considering his suspension from his communication duties.
It further urged the NDC Women’s Caucus in Parliament and the party’s Women’s Wing to publicly state their positions on the remarks and reaffirm their commitment to preventing the normalisation of rape and other forms of sexual abuse.
The statement also called on the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to strengthen public education on consent, sexual violence prevention, survivor support and responsible communication on sensitive issues.
The NPP said responsible and accountable communication was essential to improving the quality of political discourse in Ghana.
Calls for protection of alleged victims
Beyond the calls for an investigation and disciplinary action, the party urged civil society organisations, human rights advocates and women’s rights groups to speak out on the reported comments and support efforts to ensure that the 19 girls allegedly affected receive appropriate protection and support, as well as access to justice.
The party also expressed sympathy and solidarity with the students and their families, emphasising the need to protect their dignity, privacy and well-being throughout the investigative process.
It called on the relevant authorities to handle the case sensitively and ensure that the rights and welfare of the students remain a priority.
The statement was issued by Kwame Owusu Agyekum, Communications Officer of the NPP Amasaman Constituency Communications Directorate.
