Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has launched a scathing attack on President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of scheming to secure a third term in office through strategic judicial appointments.
This follows Mahama’s recent nomination of seven new Justices to the Supreme Court. The nominees include Justices Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Senyo Dzamefe, Kweku Tawiah Ackah-Boafo, Philip Bright Mensah, Janpere Bartels-Kodwo, and Hafisata Ameleboba.
Speaking at a press conference organised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Thursday, May 1, Afenyo-Markin claimed the appointments were not routine but part of a larger, calculated political manoeuvre.
“This is not a routine judicial appointment. What we are witnessing is a strategic and deliberate effort to pack the Supreme Court with loyalists,” he stated.
He further alleged that the timing of the nominations—coming immediately after the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo—signals “a deeper, more dangerous political ambition: a third-term agenda in disguise.”
The Minority Leader warned that such actions undermine democratic governance and threaten the constitutional framework of the country.
“This is not how a responsible government strengthens the rule of law. This is how a government tightens its grip on power through the backdoor,” Afenyo-Markin declared.
He called on civil society, religious groups, and the general public to be vigilant and speak out against what he described as an assault on the independence of the judiciary.
“We must not be silent. This is a national issue that transcends partisan lines. The integrity of our justice system is at stake, and we must resist any attempt to convert it into a political tool,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, Janet Nabla, Leader of the People’s National Party, has urged women across the country to join an upcoming demonstration aimed at pressuring President Mahama to reverse the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
