Atta Akyea’s Aggressive Defence Could Backfire on Adu-Boahene – Dr Ansa-Asare

A former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Dr Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has cautioned Samuel Atta Akyea, lawyer for the former National Signals Bureau (NSB) boss, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, against what he describes as a confrontational legal strategy that could worsen his client’s situation.

Speaking to Tutuwaa Danso on Starr Today, the legal academic cautioned that Atta Akyea’s threat to expose national secrets if the state continues to harass his client could worsen the legal standing of his client, rather than help him.

“My good friend Atta Akyea is a politician, a very astute politician. He is a former cabinet minister, member of the NPP and all that and already his involvement in the matter will rather infuriate the prosecutor. If I were Atta Akyea, I think I would allow someone who is neutral and who can remain emotionally detached to fight this matter. But you see you cannot fight one political man against another political man and hope to win. This saga is like that of two elephants fighting and, in this case, Adu Boahene becomes the guard, and he stands to suffer.”

His comments come after Atta Akyea accused state authorities of engaging in what he described as a calculated abuse of prosecutorial power, following the midnight rearrest of Adu-Boahene. The former NSB chief had been granted bail in a GH₵49 million cyber defense-related case, only to be picked up again shortly after. His second arrest is believed to be linked to a separate scandal involving the Ghana Water Company Limited.

Atta Akyea has criticized the state’s handling of the matter, accusing prosecutors of abusing their powers to intimidate his client. He insists Adu-Boahene voluntarily returned to Ghana and has cooperated with investigators, and that his rearrest was a calculated attempt to frustrate the defense team and tarnish his client’s image.

According to Ansa-Asare, however, Atta Akyea’s seeming tough stance may win some NPP supporters over, but it could damage his client’s case in court.
