Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed deep concern over the arrest and continued detention of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
In a Facebook post made on his official page today, Dr. Bawumia questioned the lack of clarity surrounding the charges and Wontumi’s undisclosed location since his arrest. He called on state institutions, particularly the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), to uphold the rule of law and respect the constitutional rights of the detained party official.
“No Ghanaian—regardless of political affiliation or status—should ever be denied their constitutional rights,” Bawumia wrote, emphasizing that justice and due process are “not optional” but foundational to Ghana’s democracy.

The former Vice President revealed that he has been in direct contact with Wontumi’s legal team to monitor developments and ensure his rights are protected.
He commended the legal team for their professionalism and vigilance, while warning that any deviation from lawful procedure could erode public trust in the justice system and weaken the democratic gains the country has made.

“Ghana must always remain a nation governed by law—not by arbitrary power,” Bawumia added.
Chairman Wontumi was reportedly picked up by EOCO operatives on Tuesday, May 27, following an earlier appearance at the CID headquarters. The reasons for his arrest have not yet been officially disclosed.
