Decentralising Supreme Court unnecessary for now – Private Legal Practitioner

Private Legal practitioner Godfred Anim-Nyarko has dismissed proposals to decentralise the Supreme Court, describing the idea as unnecessary at this point in time.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Joshua Kodjo Mensah, Mr. Anim-Nyarko rejected the proposal, arguing that the current structure of the Supreme Court is consistent with global best practices.

He also pointed to the concentration of legal professionals in the capital as a practical reason against decentralisation.

He said, “I in my personal view donot think it’s necessary at this point. Because we all know the Supreme Court has always been one unlike the high court that we have inly one but different divisions, but supreme court has always been one. When you go to other jurisdictions, it’s the same. They only have one supreme court sitting at one venue.”

Mr. Anim-Nyarko added, “I believe it may not be necessary at this time, even considering the fact that segmentation of lawyers, we have almost 90% of all lawyers station in Accra. So most of the lawyers who practice from the North come from Accra. I don’t think it’s necessary now, maybe in the future.”

His remarks come in response to suggestions made by members of Parliament’s Appointments Committee during the vetting of Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe on Monday, June 16, 2025.

The committee proposed the decentralisation of Ghana’s highest court to improve access to justice across the country.

Justice Dzamefe, in his response, stated that the idea was not inherently bad and could be worth considering.
